Community-Based Social Marketing Workshop (September 11, 2008)
In September 2006, social marketing expert Nancy Lee was the keynote speaker at the Upper Trinity Watershed Partners’ (UTWP) 2nd Annual Water Educator’s Workshop & Reunion, where she introduced principles for designing an effective social marketing campaign. Following the workshop, participants requested more in depth training in social marketing as applied to water education.
The Upper Trinity Watershed Partners, The University of North Texas, North Central Texas Council of Governments, the City of Farmers Branch and the U.S. EPA have collaborated to organize a workshop and two-day charrette to provide this training. The goal is to help build more effective environmental education capacity in the Upper Trinity River Basin.
The North Texas Region Community-Based Social Marketing Workshop was held on Thursday, September 11, 2008 at the Ruthe Jackson Center in Grand Prairie. This workshop covered identifying barriers to behavior change and designing effective public education programs by using community based social marketing techniques. The workshop gave participants skills to apply community-based social marketing in their education programs. Internationally renowned social marketing expert, Dr. Doug McKenzie-Mohr, delivered great information at this one-day introductory workshop. Dr. McKenzie-Mohr is a pioneer and leader in the rapidly growing field of community-based social marketing applied to environmental topics. His book, Fostering Sustainable Behavior: An Introduction to Community-Based Social Marketing (New Society Publishers), has become an indispensable guide for those who design and deliver programs promoting sustainable practices. This workshop accommodated more than 100 participants. The $35 cost included workshop materials, lunch and a copy of Dr. McKenzie-Mohr’s book, Fostering Sustainable Behavior: An Introduction to Community-Based Social Marketing.
